I am glad I am travelling at the moment so I can use my busy schedule as an excuse for not writing a proper recap of this episode. I say “I am glad” because to me –  it was a pretty bland episode. If it were not for the elephants (much bigger stars than our so-called “All Stars”) and a mildly amusing moment where Rachel misinterpreted the Roadblock clue and filled the wrong tuk-tuks with gas, there wouldn’t be anything to write home about, much less write a recap about.

Always the stars - on TAR or not

Yes, the locations are green and lush (of which we are being informed by so staged and so predictably unexciting comments of the contesters – as if we cannot see it for ourselves!); but the locations alone cannot make a successful season. There are lots of equalizers, we are shown train and taxi rides for almost a third of the episode, even the foot race to the Pit Stop is not a nail biting event despite being a close one. And on top of all that it happened to be a non-elimination leg. The over-botoxed blondes, whom most viewers still can’t tell apart, will face a Speed Bump in the next episode. At the Pit Stop they were blabbing something incoherent “like, we are so like sort of like happy kind of…” and so I just had to press the “OFF” button…

After all, the elephants were in the picture no longer, and they were the only real all-stars on this show…

Well, since the episode was of very little entertainment value, I kept wondering – why? Why indeed? The locations are beautiful…the challenges are alright, too…TAR production people are quite experienced and had some great seasons that many of us like to re-watch…I am firmly convinced it’s the cast…so, please allow me some entertainment of my own – a couple of polls…

1. Which team on this Oy-Vey…err…I mean All-Stars season you find the most boring?

2. Seriously, guys – how many of you can tell those botoxed blondes apart? It’s their second season and they are called “All Stars”, but everyone I am asking can not tell one from another. (For the record – I do not know for a fact whether they are botoxed or not, but what else can explain their look-alike frozen foreheads?!)

Well, before the sixth episode of TAR 23 airs tonight, I can’t  help but make a comment on one puzzling  observation. Since I did not recap the previous episode due to being on the road much of the week, I felt like posting at least a quick poll:WHICH OF THESE TEAMS YOU WANT TO WIN TAR-23?

I know it’s “unscientific”, I know the number of participants was not huge enough to support a trend, BUT! still – would you believe it? – as of today more than 40% (!) of respondents want to see Leo and Jamal (the Afghanimals) win the Race!  At first I couldn’t believe my eyes – seriously?!! No way!

Leo and Jamal (the "Afghanimals")

But then I thought about it…Who else do we have left?

Jason and Amy? – Young, cute, nice and…well, that’s about it. Nothing too memorable or fun about them. Actually I kept thinking that the color of their t-shirts  is more noticeable and vivid than their personalities.  (Bright blue, in case you haven’t even noticed that).

Tim and Danny? Also young, cute, nice…with something more going for these guys: they are huge fans of TAR, they have an appealing and disarming “aw-shucks” air about them…deserving? – maybe.  memorable? – hardly.

Ally and Ashley? They, too, are young, cute and nice…But even if you can finally tell these two apart, what exactly sets them apart from all the other numerous look-alike-less-than-bright blondes from all the previous seasons? They just occupy some space, and I can’t help but think they are occupying someone else’s space – some team’s that could have been fun to watch if they had made it to the Race instead of these clones.

Tim and Marie? You might dig an evil streak in TAR contestants (I certainly do!), and at first I thought Marie was just that (Tim has been pretty much a silent ghost). But turned out she is more loud than evil. Sorry, Rowan – “la diabla” she is not.  Neither is she a bright strategist; otherwise, having used her own Express Pass, she would have had some sense to U-turn Travis and Nicole –  to try taking their Express Pass out of the game. She passed that opportunity with the Pass (yes, both pun and scorn are intended!).

Nicky and Kim? These ladies sometimes seem nice to the point of almost nauseating (“bunny!” “hunny!” – pleeease!).  They almost sparked my hope once when they managed to put themselves on a standby list ahead of others. But that hope was being consistently killed with that  never-ending ridiculous whining “ this is THE  h-a-r-d-e-s-t  thing I’ve ever done in my life!!!”  Once again – pleeease! What else is there about them? Some would say they are pretty. But I have very high standards when it comes to beauty. So I don’t find them especially pretty. I do, however, find them pretty boring. By the way – not a single person in my poll (at least as of right now) voted for them to win TAR 23.

Travis and Nicole? This, by the way, is the only other team besides “hunny-bunnies” that got zero votes in my poll to date. I guess he is likable enough. But she is quite pathetic: on one hand, she comes across as sooo full of herself:  “I am a doctor!”, “I am tough – I am from Brooklyn!” But her actions are the opposite of her words: she frazzles easily and always crumbles under the slightest pressure: “Help me!!! help me!!!” I wouldn’t even comment on how it reflects on her as an ER physician, but in the Race it is quite unlikable.

So that leaves us with Leo and Jamal – the “Afghanimals.” What can we say about them? Loud, obnoxious manners. Far (far!) from refined sense of humor.  But they toned down their ululating in the recent episodes. And when they fight – they fight with passion. And when they are happy – they are joyful and vivacious. Silly, at times annoying, but entertaining. Like them or not – hard to deny that they are colorful characters. Memorable. The most memorable from this bunch. You can yawn over any of the above teams, but – like them or not – the Afghanimals are not “yawn-inducing”.

So – somewhat reluctantly, I have to agree – maybe the Afghanimals is the most deserving team to win this Race. To me – the most deserving is not the team that is the nicest or needs the money the most – to me it’s the team that entertained me the most. Or you. Us, the viewers.

I do, however, reserve the right to change my mind about the Afghanimals in the future – after all, there are still quite a few episodes ahead 🙂

I hope those who voted for them in my latest poll would comment with their reasons for choosing this team (or any other team). I am very curious, so – please do comment!

For those of you who regularly visit this humble blog – I have to apologize: I am on the road, so there won’t be the Episode 5 recap. In fact, I have not even had a chance to see the episode, and as of right now I have no idea how the yesterday’s episode ended and which team (if any) got eliminated. Nobody spoiled it for me yet! 🙂

For those who stumbled upon this blog by chance – please do come back next week or stay around and browse the previous posts.

I promise to return with the next week’s recap; meanwhile, let’s take a poll!

Time to Vote!

By now we got to know our teams well enough to make an “informed choice”. Voting can be entertaining and educational, so – vote early and vote often! (KIDDING about the “often” part!!!).

There is a little over 2 weeks left before the premiere of The Amazing Race 23.

And in this blog I have already finished dissecting/bitching about/shaking my head/rolling my eyes and otherwise introducing the cast.

So there is nothing left but patiently wait for September 29.

In my case the waiting time should fly fast since I am off to Europe for a little vacation. In fact, on the day of TAR-23 premiere I will be frolicking around Lake Maggiore (pat on the back to people who know where it is and a disapproving glance to people who don’t).

Lake Maggiore

But for those fans of the show who need some help passing the time between now and then, why not take a little poll?

Which team do you want to see eliminated first?

Not which team you think might be eliminated first, but which team do you want to go first? In other words – which team do you dislike the most?

As for me – I can’t decide between “baseball wives” and “ice crew girls”. But I’ll have a lot of time to mull it over while sipping Campari 🙂

LET’S VOTE! (Most Entertaining Team So Far; TAR-22)

To my huge disappointment there was no Amazing Race yesterday due to CBS and CTV’s broadcasts of the Academy of Country Music Awards. Maybe it was worth it, but not for me. I don’t mind country music, but I do mind it preempting The Amazing Race!

Anyway, to make the time fly faster until next Sunday, let’s turn to voting. We only have 6 teams left –  let’s see which of them is the most fun and entertaining to watch.

From talking to many fans, reading TAR related blogs and forums, I can tell that the least-likable team seems to be either the Honeymooners (Max and Katie) or the You Tubers (Joey and Meghan). The most likable team seems to be either the Hillbillies (Chuck and Wynona) or the Hockey Brothers (Bates and Anthony).

But “likable” and “entertaining” are not always synonymous. Remember this season’s David and Connor? – Likable people, no doubt, but “please-shoot-me” boring! Or take the ex-Survivor player Boston Rob (and his bride) – not very likable at all (especially if you remember how he drove past the car accident of his fellow racers without even slowing down to see if they were alive or not). But entertaining to watch nevertheless.

Paraphrasing a famous quote about well-behaved women seldom making history, I must say that likable teams are seldom entertaining to watch on the Amazing Race. Not that it’s impossible – remember the Globetrotters? – both likable AND entertaining. But it’s rare.

To me – the most entertaining team of the remaining 6 teams is Team Honeymooners (Max and Katie). Chuck and Wynona would be runner-ups (mostly because of Chuck; Wynona is not much fun).

What about you – which of the remaining teams are the most entertaining for you to watch on the Race?

So, tomorrow I am going on a long trip to a faraway land. On one hand, I am happy because the trip promises to be an amazing one. On the other hand, I will have to miss The Amazing Race – two episodes of it, to be exact. Where I am going – I might not have internet connection, let alone TV. That means that  I would not even know for quite some time which team is eliminated next. That also means – no recaps for the next two episodes.

But I am trying to prolong the pleasure of The Amazing Race. So, why not play  a TAR-related version of children’s game “Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?” Only it’ll be called “Where in the world is the author of this blog going?

Here are 3 clues, take your pick or use all 3 to help you find which country I am going to:

1. The Amazing Race was there in Season 5, after Kenya but before The United Arab Emirates.

2. In Season 20 of The Amazing Race the adorable team Mark and Bopper won a leg of the Race in this country.

3. This country has a prominent landmark featured in the title of one of Hemingway‘s short stories.

So – Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?

Well, guys, stay safe and enjoy the upcoming episodes of The Amazing Race! I will be back!!!

It’s only Wednesday – still 4 (!) days till the next episode of The Amazing Race! So – to make time fly faster, let’s do some polls again.

I find polls quite enlightening. Take my last poll, for example – “Which team do you want to see eliminated next?“. As of now there are 31 votes of which 14 (= 45.16%) went to Max and Katie and 8 (=25.81%) went to Joey and Meghan. So – these are the teams that you seem to dislike the most.

Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly) – the only two teams who didn’t get any votes are David and Connor and Chuck and Wynona.  So these seem to be your favourites so far. Good. I am on the same page here.

Let’s take 2 more polls now.

1. “Brains” vs “Brawn” – which challenges on The Amazing Race are more enjoyable to you : mental or physical?

2. “Looks” vs “Personality”  – what type of teams  you prefer: good to look at or fun to watch ?

Do vote early and often! (kidding about the “often” part. One person = one vote)
